What is wave particle
theory???!!😵😵
The wave-particle duality of
electrons is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. It states that
electrons have both wave-like and particle-like properties. This means that
electrons can behave as both waves and particles, depending on the experimental
setup.
For example, in nutshell, when an electron is observed in a double-slit experiment, it behaves like a wave and shows interference patterns. However, when it is detected by a detector, it behaves like a particle. This phenomenon has revolutionized our understanding of the behavior of matter at the atomic and subatomic level.
Thomas Young's double-slit experiment

This interference pattern indicated that the electrons were behaving as waves, interfering constructively or destructively as they passed through the slits. It demonstrated the wave-like nature of electrons and raised questions about the nature of particles.
Arthur Compton's scattering experiment
On the other hand, Arthur Compton's scattering experiment provided evidence for the particle-like nature of electrons. By firing X-rays at electrons, he observed that the X-rays scattered off the electrons, just like billiard balls colliding. These experimental observations led to the development of the wave-particle duality concept. It proposed that particles, including electrons, can exhibit both wave-like and particle-like behavior, depending on the experimental setup and the type of observation being made.
The wave-particle duality of electrons revolutionized our understanding of matter at the atomic and subatomic level. It paved the way for the formulation of quantum mechanics, a branch of physics that successfully describes the behavior of particles at the quantum scale.
The wave-particle duality has practical implications as well. It has led to the development of technologies like electron microscopy, which allows us to observe and study the structure of materials at the atomic level. Furthermore, it forms the basis of quantum computing, which has the potential to revolutionize computation in the future.
